As electric cars enter the motoring mainstream, the technology supporting them is increasingly sophisticated. Drawbacks such as performance issues, limited range, long charge times, and exorbitant costs are falling away, revealing a new, steadily growing industry.

Electric cars cost significantly less than conventional gas vehicles to run and maintain — and their cost is about the same as many conventional vehicles. In addition, there are no oil changes, emissions tests, and fewer moving parts to wear out and break. In fact, many owners of electric cars report going years without incurring service or repair bills.

Electric cars are less damaging to the environment. With zero tailpipe emissions, they are better for the air that we breathe. They help combat smog and reduce the driver’s carbon footprint. In addition, transportation is now the largest source of greenhouse gas emissions in the US. If we all relied on electric vehicles instead of gas-powered ones, this would go a long way toward fighting climate change.

In this article, we look at seven of the most popular electric car models on the US market in 2021.

1. Tesla Model 3

Having sold more than 51,000 units to date, Tesla’s Model 3 was released almost four years ago, yet remains on top of its game in terms of both value for money and class-leading range.

The Model 3’s minimalist design combined with its large touchscreen control panel started a new trend in the electric vehicle market. With a base price of $38,690, combined fuel economy of 133 MPGe, and a range of up to 353 miles, Tesla’s Model 3 continues to represent a feature-packed option at a relatively low price.

2. 2020 Jaguar I-Pace

Starting at $69,850, the 2020 Jaguar I-Pace includes all-wheel drive, which provides instant acceleration and the ultimate in performance on and off of the track. Incorporating plenty of cargo space as well as two rows of full-sized seats, the classic cabin is equipped with a dual-screen infotainment system, a 12.3-inch driver display, leather seats, a Meridian audio system, a panoramic sunroof, and a Wi-Fi hot spot.

With a strong, quiet powertrain, excellent handling, and a roomy cabin, the 2020 Jaguar I-Pace offers a comfortable ride with a range of up to 234 miles. Among luxury electric SUVs, it is a great choice.

3. 2020 Tesla Model S

With a maximum range of 402 miles, the 2020 Tesla Model S enjoyed the number-one spot in US News & World Report’s ranking of luxury hybrid and electric cars. With significantly more range than any other electric car on the market, the Model S accelerates like a supercar. It combines cutting-edge technology with a premium cabin equipped with a variety of creature comforts, including a Wi-Fi hot spot, navigation, voice-activated controls, leather upholstery, 17-inch touch screen, dashcam, heated seats, and autopilot.

With prices starting at $74,990, this luxury range is available to buy or lease in most US states, although it is not eligible for the federal electric car tax credit.

4. 2020 Porsche Taycan

Starting at $103,830, the 2020 Porsche Taycan is the luxury car manufacturer’s first all-electric model. Much more expensive than its rivals and somewhat short on range, the Taycan still delivers excellent acceleration and handling, as well as a very smooth ride.

With a trunk capable of accommodating a few suitcases as well as a small trunk in the front, the 2020 Taycan has a maximum range of 201 miles. Its 4S base model comes with adaptive air suspension, Apple CarPlay, partial leather seats, a 10.9 inch infotainment screen, and all-wheel drive as standard features.

5. Ford Mustang Mach-E

With almost 13,000 units sold to date, the Mach-E may not be Ford’s first EV, but it is the most popular. Incorporating rear or all-wheel drive, the base model starts at $43,995, with a range of up to 305 miles.

Designed in the style of Ford’s iconic Mustang, the Mach-E fleet will soon incorporate a GT version boasting 480 horsepower and capable of reaching 60 MPH in just 3.8 seconds.

6. 2020 Audi e-tron

With basic models starting at $77,400, Audi’s e-tron SUV has a maximum range of 204 miles. Thanks to the vehicle’s outstanding driving dynamics, superb crash test rating, state-of-the-art technology, and exceptionally smooth ride, the e-tron is arguably the most luxurious all-electric vehicle on the market today.

Incorporating large, comfortable seats in both rows and ample cargo capacity, the Audi e-tron also features wireless phone charging, Audi’s Virtual Cockpit, a variety of driver-assist systems, smartphone app integration, and a Bang & Olufsen sound system.

7. Chevrolet Bolt

With a combined fuel efficiency of 118 MPGe and a range of up to 259 miles, the newly redesigned Chevrolet Bolt lineup includes the crossover Bolt EUV. Starting at $37,495, the Bolt range has proven immensely popular, with sales up by 142% in the first half of 2021 compared with the previous year.

Capable of going from 0 to 65 MPH in just 6.5 seconds, the Bolt incorporates a spacious interior, convenient charging, and strong acceleration to provide a smooth, fun drive on any road.
